For some years I ran a project for new ND Product Design students at the Jacob Kramer
School of Art in Leeds. The task was essentially to collapse a cube flat (sometimes,
to do this without touching the cube), using any available materials and thinking
creatively about how to portray a cube (as lines, in negative, slices, standing on a corner,
etc). The solutions to this problem were sometimes extraordinarily creative, elegant
and witty, and were a highlight of my teaching year.
The image above shows a sequence of collapsing cubes, from the first idea
on the left, through progressively complex and sophisticated solutions as
one moves to the right. It's a pity that the final solutions are not animated.
